Colon ascariasis (barium study)

Case contributed by Mohammad Taghi Niknejad
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Non-specific abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male

Barium enema

Fluoroscopy

A long tubular filling in the descending colon extends into the sigmoid colon and contains a thin barium column centered within, resulting in parallel bands appearance, highly suggestive of ascariasis.

Case Discussion

Intestinal ascariasis presents as individual worms, which appear as long tube-like structures on a contrast enema. When the worm's digestive system is empty, it may be seen as a filling defect. If the digestive system is full, the worm appears in parallel bands, as in this case. In cross-sectional views, the worm resembles a target, with the body wall forming a circle around a central dot representing its gut.
