Acute left iliac fossa pain

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

CT study shows segmental mural thickening of the distal descending and proximal sigmoid colon measures about 6 cm length and 2 cm thickness with an associated localized blurring of pericolic fat planes. Multiple outpouching diverticula are seen related to this segment. No related abscess or collection.

Case Discussion

Here is a typical case of colonic diverticulitis. Differential diagnosis is colonic carcinoma. Serum CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) was normal. The pain subsided with medical treatment.
