Colour comet-tail artefact

Case contributed by Dr Abdallah Al Khateeb

Lower urinary tract symptoms.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years old
Gender: Male

The grey scale image shows an echogenic focus dependent in the urinary bladder, showing clear posterior acoustic shadowing. Also, the prostate gland is enlarged and indenting the base of urinary bladder.
On the color Doppler image, there is an area of turbulent flow-like shadow, emanating from the focus.

Case Discussion

Color comet-tail artefact is the result of the ultrasonic Doppler waves facing a highly reflective object, which in this case is a stone.
