Presentation

Previous silicone breast augmentation in Asia (not happy with result) so had retropectoral PIP silicone prostheses inserted, now ? ruptured

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Bilateral silicone prostheses that are retropectoral in location and intact with prominent capsulation and radial folds. Minor fluid in the host capsules. In addition there are multiple droplets of free silicone in the more superficial breast tissue and skin. This is presumed to have resulted from the first augmentation procedure in Asia!

Case Discussion

MRI is the investigation of choice for silicone prosthesis assessment - it provides excellent anatomical definition and using inversion recovery sequences can produce silicone sensitive and silicone suppressed images that help immeasurably to differentiate capsular rupture, capsulation and free silicone in the breast tissue or draining lymph nodes
