Presentation

Pregnant women participating in the antenatal care program in gestational week 23.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Four chamber view shows a fetal single atrium caused by the complete absence of interatrial septum (both septum primum and septum secundum). Both mitral and tricuspid valves are in the same plane. The three vessels tracheal view shows that the aorta is larger than the pulmonary artery (AA/MPA > 1). This is caused by a large amount of blood passing through the left ventricle.

Case Discussion

The common atrium is a rare congenital heart disease. It is characterized by a mixture of arterial and venous blood. Common atrium may be isolated, as in this case, or associated with other forms of congenital heart disease.
