Communicating hydrocephalus (chronic)

Presentation

Chronic headache of 12 years duration.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

Dilatation of the lateral, third and fourth ventricles with no transependymal seepage. The sulci and cisterns are within normal limits. The brain parenchymal is unremarkable.

Case Discussion

MRI findings are in keeping with long standing communicating hydrocephalus. Communicating hydrocephalus involves the dilatation of the lateral, third and fourth ventricles usually due to extra-ventricular CSF flow circulation abnormality. Causes include subarachnoid hemorrhage and meningitis.
