Complex left breast lesion assessment

Case contributed by Garth Kruger
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

The patient is referred for biopsy of a complex left breast lesion.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years old
Gender: Female
ultrasound

On the ultrasound study a complex poorly circumscribed hypoechoic lesion is shown. But notice its at 15 MHz. That is way too high.

ultrasound

The same lesion at 11 MHZ is a small simple cyst that disappeared on FNA.

Case Discussion

Make sure you are aware of the transducer frequencies programmed into your machines. In our clinics on our machines 15 MHz is way too high for breast; its even too high for thyroids.

The high transducer frequencies may cause you to overcall pathology on ultrasound of the breast.
