Presentation
Pain in the right ankle and foot with changes in skin color, 3 months after trauma.
Patient Data
Patchy extensive bone marrow edema.
Extensive soft tissue and muscle edema with minimal enhancement.
Mild ankle joint effusion.
Case Discussion
MRI features are consistent with complex regional pain syndrome (Sudeck atrophy).
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is principally a clinical diagnosis, characterized by pain, stiffness, swelling, and discoloration.
CRPS follows a relatively minor trauma, but the exact cause is unknown. Radiologically, it is characterized by regional patchy osteopenia and soft tissue swelling.
