Extensive periventricular, basal ganglionic and parenchymal calcification with hydrocephalic changes and parenchymal atrophy
Diagnosis: CMV encephalitis
Case Discussion
Transplacental spread of cytomegalovirus results in congenital CMV infection which has variable appearance according to the time of infection, however periventricular, basal ganglionic and parenchymal calcification together with migrational abnormalities are all common features.
The congenital infections are known as TORCH.
