Congenital diaphragmatic hernia

One day history of vomiting, followed by increased work of breathing. Two hours post the below radiograph the neonate experienced a sudden desaturation.

Patient Data

Age: 4-8 weeks
  • multiple loops of bowel within the left hemithorax
  • left diaphragm difficult to visualize
  • contents of the mediastinum appear shifted to the right

Case Discussion

Congenital diaphragmatic hernias usually arise as either a Bochdalek hernia or a Morgagni henia.

Bochadalek hernias are the more prevent of the two diaphragmatic hernias. They are often left sided. This is in contrast to the Morgagni hernia, which is usually right sided and less common.
