Congenital umbilical hernia

Case contributed by Dijendra Nath Biswas

Midline painless mass since birth

Patient Data

Age: 10 months
Gender: Male

X-ray of the abdomen in frontal and lateral projections shows a soft tissue opacity protruding from the umbilical region containing gut loops.

Proximal gut loops are not dilated. No intra-abdominal free air is seen.

Case Discussion

10 month old male child presented with painless midline abdominal mass since birth. On x-ray there is a soft tissue opacity mass, protruding from the umbilical region containing gut loops without any proximal gut loops dilatation and free intra-abdominal air. Features are suggestive of congenital umbilical hernia containing gut loops without any obvious sign of complication.
