Concern from general practitioner regarding contraceptive implant device migration after external chest x-ray performed.
Patient Data
A radiodense linear foreign body is identified. The proximal end of the foreign body is lodged within a third order left lower lobe pulmonary artery with the distal end embedded within the lung parenchyma.
Case Discussion
The patient was asymptomatic of the embolised implant device (Implanon NXT).
After multidisciplinary discussion between the cardiothoracic surgery and interventional radiology units, it was decided that it was not necessary to remove the device surgically or through endovascular retrieval given its location in the lung and that it was not currently active (given the return of menses).
Endovascular implant migration is a rare phenomenon but can have serious consequences. Specialist cardiothoracic and interventional radiologist opinion is suggested.
