Presentation

Teenage female who presents to ED after forgetting about her implantable contraceptive.

XR Upper Extremity

Radiograph of the upper extremity visualizes contraceptive implant. The device is linear and about 4 cm in sub dermal location. It is visible due to the barium sulfate added to the core.

Case Discussion

The patient stated that she previously had Nexplanon placed about a year ago and had forgotten about the implant. Came to the ER to have it evaluated.

There are two brands of long acting reversible implantable contraception currently available: Nexplanon and Implanon.
