Presentation

Swollen painful left forearm and hand after IV contrast injection with automated power injection (venous access in the back of the left hand).

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

X-ray findings show diffuse hyperdense in the soft tissues of the left hand and forearm consistent with contrast media extravasation.

US shows subcutaneous edema of the left hand.

Case Discussion

Contrast media extravasation is one of the complications of contrast-enhanced CT scanning which can result in necrosis of soft tissue and compartment syndrome. This patient has the risk factors of CMEV such as advanced age, female sex, automated power injection.
