Copper beaten skull

Presentation

Bulging in the midline frontal region.

Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Female

Closure of the coronal and metopic sutures is noted however sagittal and lambdoid sutures are still open. Bulging of the bony anterior fontanelle is noted.

Prominence of convolutional markings (gyral impressions on the inner table of the skull) is seen throughout the skull vault giving the so called "copper beaten skull" or "beaten brass skull" appearance.

Ventricular system appears prominent (enlarged 4th ventricle, 3rd ventricle and temporal horns of both lateral ventricles).

Case Discussion

Closure of bi-coronal and metopic sutures with resultant increased intracranial pressure evident by: bony bulging of the anterior fontanelle, prominent ventricular system, persistent open sagittal and lambdoid sutures and copper beaten skull appearance.
