Cortical superficial siderosis

Case contributed by Anthony Nuñez
Diagnosis certain

History of multiple intradural cranial surgery.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

Gradient-echo T2-weighted MRI shows a rim of hypointensity around multiple fronto-parieto-occipital sulci, consistent with cortical superficial siderosis.

Case Discussion

Cortical superficial siderosis results from hemosiderin deposition in the subpial layers of the brain, as in this case.

Many causes of cortical superficial siderosis must be considered as meningeal pathology, tumors, trauma, and history of surgery.
