Costal cartilage fracture

Blunt trauma to lower chest / upper abdomen about 4 days back. Complaining of localized pain in the right lower anterior chest wall during coughing / sneezing / deep breathing.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

There is a discontinuity of right 7th costal cartilage which correlates with site of pain pointed by the patient. Adjacent 6th costal cartilage is intact where there was no pain.

Case Discussion

Young male with blunt trauma to lower chest / upper abdomen was referred with negative chest for rib radiograph. Ultrasound shows a fracture of right 7th costal cartilage. Abdominal ultrasound was normal.
