Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia

Presentation

Painless swelling right side of the face.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years old
Gender: Female
x-ray

Increased density of an enlarged right maxillary sinus showing a 'ground glass' appearance and indistinct margins.

'Bubbly' appearance of right mandible. Thickened and sclerotic left temporal bone.

Expanded and sclerotic facial and skull bones with characteristic 'ground glass' appearance typical for fibrous dysplasia.

x-ray

Expansile lesions in multiple ribs on the left side with 'ground glass' appearance and sclerosis resulting in deformity of the left rib cage.

Indistinct margins of right 9th rib on the right which is also expanded. A focal lytic expansile lesion in right 2nd rib inferiorly.

Case Discussion

This was subsequently proven on biopsy to be fibrous dysplasia.
