Craniopharyngioma

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female
MRI

MRI brain

Centered on in the suprasellar cistern extending up into the third ventricle and down into the pituitary fossa is a mass with multiple cystic components of varying T1 intensity. They are high signal on T2 and the walls as well as a solid component inferiorly demonstrate enhancement.

A right occipitoparietal VP shunt is partially seen.

Case Discussion

Histology confirmed a craniopharyngioma. Although the actual report is unavailable to me, the presence of high T1 signal cysts and the fact the mass is predominently cysts suggests that this is an adamantinomatous subtype. One would expect to see some calcification on CT.
