Crossed fused renal ectopia

Case contributed by Dr Ammar Haouimi

Microscopic haematuria

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male

No renal structure is seen in the right lumbar fossa.

The right kidney crosses the midline and is fused to the lower pole of the left kidney, forming a crossed fused renal ectopia. Both kidneys are malrotated with evidence of pelviureteric junction obstruction of the left kidney. The ureter of the right ectopic kidney crosses the midline anterior to the left common iliac vessels and enters the bladder on the opposite side.

Vertebral anomalies are noted at the dorsolumbar junction (vertebral blocks, and hemivertebra)

Case Discussion

CT-IVU features of a crossed fused renal ectopia type an according to McDonald and McClellan's classification of crossed renal ectopias with associated left pelviureteric junction obstruction.

Right left renal ectopia is less common than left to right
