Croup

Case contributed by Liam Pugh
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Stridor. Radiograph obtained due to history of possible foreign body ingestion (coin).

Patient Data

Age: 11 months
Gender: Male

Chest Xray

x-ray

Steeple sign (narrowing of the upper trachea). Otherwise normal radiograph.

Case Discussion

Chest x-ray showing the steeple sign often seen in croup 1.

This 11 month old male presented with stridor. A recent history of cough and fever with additional examination findings of expiratory wheeze in a fully vaccinated child were consistent with croup.

A radiograph was obtained due to concern regarding possible ingestion of a coin. Routine imaging is not usually required in croup, as it is mostly a clinical diagnosis 2.
