Chronic pulmonary symptoms , meconium ileus at birth

Patient Data

Gender: Male

Imaged in 2011

Diffuse reticulonodular changes with bronchiectasis and prominent hila. Lung volume is preserved.


2013 study:

Scout image shows finger in glove appearance .

On CT, note the tree in bud pattern nodules, the cylinderical bronchiectasis, and the mucous plugs.

Associated abnormalities in cystic fibrosis:

  • exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
  • pansinusitis
    • almost all will have underdeveloped & opacified paranasal sinuses on imaging
  • biliary cirrhosis
  • bone demineralization
    • compression fractures are common
    • rib fractures
  • infertility
  • high association with meconium ileus at birth

Case Discussion

Consider cystic fibrosis in any young adult with unexplained bronchiectasis.

For a young adult with diffuse bronchiectasis and interstitial lung disease, consider cystic fibrosis until proven otherwise.
