Cystic renal cell carcinoma: gross pathology

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Presentation

Mass in the kidney on imaging for which a nephrectomy was performed.

Modality: Pathology

Large multi-cystic mass in the lower pole of the kidney, involving the cortex, extending to the renal sinus fat.

Case Discussion

Note the cystic nature of this renal tumour. On gross appearance alone, it is impossible to distinguish this example of cystic RCC from other cystic lesions such as multilocular cyst.
