DCIS recurrence right breast

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

Follow up diagnostic mammogram

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

This patient had DCIS right breast confimed in 2009. Treatment with segmental resection and radiation.

2009 mammogram shows the calcifications in the right breast. Biopsy confirmed DCIS.

Follow up was unremarkable in 2010-2012. In 2013 several calcifications had re appeared and repeat stereo biopsy confirmed DCIS. The MLO view confirms the post surgical change and the relatively innocuous- looking mincrocalcifications.

Case Discussion

Beware calcifications that develop in a case of previous DCIS regardless of what they look like individually. DCIS is underestimated by the imaging findings. We as breast imagers understimate the extent of disease on the images we generate. Its really important that the segmental resection has clear margins.
