DCIS right breast

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

A 40 year old woman comes for routine screening mammography

Patient Data

Age: 40
Gender: Female

Microcalcifications are found extending in a radila fashion upper outer quadrant right breast. The mag views are very suggestive of DCIS (later confirmed histologically)

Ultrasound of the area showed this solid component.

Case Discussion

Confirmed DCIS with an IDC component as suspected on the ultrasound images.

Always do ultrasound on your workup of microcalcifications.

The DCIS component is actually much larger than suggested on the mammogram. The extent was fron the nipple radially into the preriphery of the breast. the extent of the calcifications underestimates the extent of disease in most cases.

The microcalcifications of DCIS are sometimes incorrectly as "amorphous". This means without shape or form. The calcs have both shape and form. They are heterogeneous, not amorphous.
