Dermoid: gluteal region (on ultrasound)

Presentation

Left gluteal region swelling - about 5 - 6 mths. P/H/o surgery in left gluteal region in neonatal period - No details available. H/o recurrent discharge locally during childhood.

Patient Data

Age: about 20 - 25 yrs
Gender: Female
ultrasound

There is a well-defined ovoid lesion is seen in region of interest.

Size                 - 50 x 40 x 30 mm

Location          - lesion abutts skin

                       - lesion in subcutenous plane.

                       -  Seperate from bone and muscle.

                       - It abutts skin scar

Morphology - Heterogeneous

                  - internal fluid clefts, with lobulated hyperechoic areas without vascularity

                  - Multiple Linear echogenic foci are noted in lesion

Wall            - thin wall of less than 2 mm around lesion

Doppler      - No flow in lesion.     

Case Discussion

There is a subcutaneous lesion containing hair follicles.

Histopathology ( verbal communication with operating surgeon ) - Dermoid.
