Development of a bucket-handle tear of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus

Presentation

Knee pain after rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament 6 years ago. No preceding anterior ligament reconstruction.

Patient Data

Age: 23
Gender: Female

Old tear of the anterior cruciate ligament from an injury 6 years ago.

A vertical hyperintense zone of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus can be seen in the T1-sequence.

Follow-up MRI after 7 months

Modality: MRI

Anteromedial displaced bucket-handle tear of the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus.

Case Discussion

This case shows the development of a bucket-handle tear.

The patient had a vertical hyperintense zone in the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus (sagittal T1).

Within 7 months a vertical tear developed with longitudinally extension and a medial displacement.

Bucket handle tears are most common at the posterior horn of the medial meniscus.
