Dextrocardia, situs inversus and atrial septal defect

Case contributed by Dr Jayanth Keshavamurthy

Routine echocardiographic follow-up showed an enlarged right ventricle; therefore a cardiac MRI was performed.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

Is this dextrocardia or dextrocardia with situs inversus?

Dextrocardia with situs inversus. Look where the liver shadow is.

Can you spot all the abnormalities.

Dextrocardia and situs inversus with atrial septal defect (ASD).

Case Discussion

Patient underwent cardiac catheterisation and an Amplatzer ASD occluder device placement.

MRI helped in showing the ASD size, location and a left to right shunt fraction calculation of 1.5:1.

It is unusual to have cardiac anomalies in cases of dextrocardia with situs inversus.
