Dialysis line - correct position

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Renal failure, requiring haemodialysis.

Patient Data

Age: 55
Gender: Female

Right internal jugular dialysis catheter.

Catheter tip is ideally positioned at the tip of the right atrium.

Case Discussion

A large number of patients are on haemodialysis.

This requires a wide bore central venous line - most commonly placed in the right internal jugular vein.

The tip position is ideally at the tip of the right atrium, given the high flow rates for dialysis.
