Diaphragmatic eventration

Case contributed by Dr Hidayatullah Hamidi

Chest radiograph of an asymptomatic patient, revealed abnormal opacity in the right lower zone.

Patient Data

Age: 92 years
Gender: Male

Anteromedial aspect of the right hemidiaphragm is elevated and has an abnormal contour. There is sharp border between the eventrated portion and the remainder of the hemidiaphragm.

No pathology is seen in the supra and infra-diaphragmatic regions.

Case Discussion

Diaphragmatic eventration refers to congenital abnormality of the diaphragmatic contour. It typically affects only a segment of the hemidiaphragm, compared to paralysis/weakness where the entire hemidiaphragm is affected.
