Distal biceps brachii tendon rupture

Case contributed by Henry Knipe

Presentation

Traumatic injury of the left elbow while grabbing a cow.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male

Complete rupture of the distal biceps tendon, which is retracted up to 6 cm the insertion at the radial tuberosity. Fluid and a small hematoma fill the defect. The tendon stump, which measures about 2 cm, is frayed, heterogeneous and thickened, suggestive of underlying tendinosis.

Case Discussion

Typical appearances of a complete distal biceps brachii rupture. Due to patient discomfort resulting in movement, the radiographer switched from a standard PD sequence to a BLADE PD sequence (Siemens Healthcare), a PROPELLER technique, which allows for faster acquisition to contour motion artifact.
