Presentation

History of Injury to left little finger by pipe at the workplace, on clinical examination: small wound, tender on left little finger distal phalanx.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

X-ray shows transverse fracture at the distal phalanx of the left little finger with mild angulation.

Case Discussion

  • Phalangeal fractures result from direct trauma (hammer-heavy object)or catching a finger in a closing door, or the toe is crushed between two rigid bodies.
  • Distal phalanx fractures are often accompanied by injury to the nail bed, nail avulsion, or subungual hematoma.
  • If the fracture is not fused, ORIF may be required.
