Distal radius fractures with intra-articular component

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Fall on an outstretched left hand.

Patient Data

Age: 40
Gender: Female

Left wrist x-rays show a transverse fracture line along the distal radius metaphyseal area with fragmentation and longitudinal intra-articular extension (radiocarpal joint). There is also a mild dorsal displacement partially hidden by an oblique positioning on the perfil projection.

Case Discussion

This case illustrates the consequence after a fall onto an outstretched hand. It is important to note that having an intra-articular component this fracture can not be called as a Colles fracture (extra-articular fracture of the distal radius).
