Presentation
Injury to ankle while playing football. Tender lateral malleolus.
Patient Data
Normal appearances on the frontal radiograph with no significant soft-tissue swelling.
Small joint effusion on the lateral view and an oblique lucency that is projected over the posterior portion of the distal tibial metaphysis. In addition, the anterior physis is widened.
Case Discussion
This case shows the importance of looking carefully at the tibia and fibula on the lateral view. The oblique fracture extends through the metaphysis to the physis and the anterior physis is widened. Appearances here are of a Salter-Harris type II fracture.
