Double bubble sign with polyhydramnios

Presentation

Primigravida for routine antenatal work up. Abdominal examination showed a uterus size that is more than the gestational age calculated from the last menstrual period.

Patient Data

Age: 30
Gender: Female
Ultrasound

Double bubble sign - dilated stomach and proximal duodenum.

Two vessels umbilical cord - single artery and single vein.

Gross polyhydramnios.

Case Discussion

The double bubble sign is seen in infants and represents dilatation of the proximal duodenum and stomach. It is seen in both radiographs and ultrasound and can be identified antenatally. It is non-specific with a wide differential.
