Double IVC with azygos and hemiazygos continuation

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Incidental finding.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female

CT Chest and abdomen - (selected images)

There is an entire duplication of the inferior vena cava with the right one draining to the azygos vein and the left one to the hemiazygos vein. Azygos and hemiazygos veins unite in the chest and drain into the superior vena cava.

Full duplication of the IVC.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates the presence of complete duplication of the inferior vena cava associated with anomalous drainage to the azygos-hemiazygos system. There is an absence of the hepatic segment of the IVC and the hepatic veins join and drain directly into the right atrium.

Special thanks to Dr Marcel Rios.
