Presentation

Screening mammography. Strong family history of breast carcinoma.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female
mammography

Pleomorphic microcalcifications in the upper-outer quadrant of the right breast. No associated mass lesion, architectural distortion, overlying skin thickening or nipple retraction is noted.  No such calcifications are seen in the left breast.  No significant axillary lymphadenopathy is seen.

x-ray

Right breast microcalcifications were faintly identified by the breast ultrasound examination and a biopsy was taken under ultrasound-guidance. A radiograph was taken of the biopsy specimen to confirm the presence of microcalcifications.

Case Discussion

Mammographic findings are suggestive of BI-RADS 5 right mammogram. Ultrasound-guided biopsy of the right breast showed ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Later on , the patient underwent bilateral mastectomy and the histopathology showed ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in both breasts. Genetic analysis was also done due to the strong family history of breast malignancy, which was, however, negative.
