Presentation
Follow up diagnostic mammogram
Patient Data
This patient had DCIS right breast confirmed in 2009. Treatment with segmental resection and radiation.
2009 mammogram shows calcifications in the right breast. Biopsy confirmed DCIS.
Follow up was unremarkable in 2010-2012. In 2013 several calcifications had re-appeared and a repeat stereo biopsy confirmed DCIS. The MLO view confirms the post-surgical change and the relatively innocuous-looking microcalcifications.
Case Discussion
Beware of calcifications that develop in a case of the previous DCIS regardless of what they look like individually. DCIS is underestimated by the imaging findings. We as breast imagers underestimate the extent of disease in the images we generate. It's really important that the segmental resection has clear margins.
