Presentation

Antenatally identified case of duodenal atresia.

Patient Data

Age: 2 days
Gender: Male
x-ray

Gaseous distension of stomach and proximal duodenum with absence of bowel gas distally giving the classical appearance of double bubble sign, compatible with duodenal atresia.

Nasogastric tube is in-situ, seen in the dilated stomach shadow.

Case Discussion

Duodenal atresia results from a congenital malformation of the duodenum and requires prompt correction in the neonatal period. It is considered to be one of the commonest causes of a fetal bowel obstruction.
