Duodenal atresia

Case contributed by Dr Ammar Haouimi

Presentation

G1P0 at 33 weeks gestation. Routine ultrasound.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female
Ultrasound

There are two dilated communicating digestive structures in the left upper and mid-abdomen giving the appearance of a double bubble sign and representing a dilated fetal stomach and proximal duodenum. No other associated fetal anomalies.

No significant increase in amniotic fluid volume.

Case Discussion

Ultrasound features most consistent with duodenal atresia.

The communication between both dilated fluid-filled structures excludes the possibility of a  foregut duplication cyst or other abdominal cysts.
