Duodenal atresia

Case contributed by Dr Rengarajan R

Primigravida for routine antenatal check up.

Patient Data

Age: 20
Gender: Female

Abdominal examination showed a uterus size that is more than the gestational age calculated from the LMP.

Ultrasound showed "double bubble sign" with polyhydramnios

Case Discussion

Double bubble sign, commonly noted on postnatal x-rays, can also be seen in antenatal ultrasound scans. This leads to a suspicion of structural anomalies which cause duodenal obstruction such as duodenal atresia, webs, annular pancreas, malrotation, etc.

In utero the sign is apparent because the bubbles are fluid filled. These patients also develop polyhydramnios - as was seen in this case.
