Duodenal diverticulitis

Case contributed by Dr Michael P Hartung

Upper abdominal pain.

Large, thick-walled, inflamed duodenal diverticulum projecting from the medial 2nd portion. It is filled with mottled material resembling stool, and does not have oral contrast.

3 months previously

Prominent duodenal diverticulum is filled with oral contrast and not inflamed.

Case Discussion

Diverticula can occur anywhere along the GI tract and become inflamed. Duodenal diverticula are a common finding on CT, but diverticulitis is uncommon. In this case, inspissated material fills the inflamed diverticulum and likely caused erosion of the diverticular wall, resulting in diverticulitis.
