Presentation
Recurrent urinary tract infections.
Patient Data
CT urography of complete duplication of the left urinary collecting system. The upper renal moiety ureter has an ectopic insertion medial and inferior to the lower renal moiety ureter and the lower renal moiety ureter has an insertion lateral and superior to the upper renal moiety ureter. No significant hydronephrosis.
Normal appearance of the right kidney and collecting system.
Case Discussion
Duplex collecting system is one of the most common congenital renal tract abnormalities.
According to Weigert-Meyer law in a duplex kidney with complete ureteral duplication, the upper and lower renal moieties are drained by separate ureters, each having its own ureteral orifice in the bladder:
the upper renal moiety ureter has an ectopic insertion medial and inferior to the lower renal moiety ureter and frequently ends in a ureterocele
the lower renal moiety ureter has an orthotopic insertion lateral and superior to the upper renal moiety ureter, and vesicoureteral reflux can occur
