Presentation

Dysphagia

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female
Fluoroscopy
  • smooth narrowing from possible external compression of the thoracic esophagus

  • mild esophageal dysmotility

The narrowing in the upper esophagus was favored to represent compression from an aberrant right subclavian artery and a CT chest was recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

ct

CT confirmation of an aberrant right subclavian artery passing posterior to and indenting the esophagus.

Case Discussion

The diagnosis of dysphagia lusoria in this case was suspected on the barium swallow and confirmed on CT. The aberrant right subclavian artery is passing posterior to the esophagus but may pass anterior to the esophagus, either between the trachea and esophagus or anterior to the trachea.
