Early stage porcelain gallbladder

Case contributed by Mohammad Taghi Niknejad
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Work up for abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Marginal calcification is present at the gallbladder fundus, suggestive of early stage porcelain gallbladder.

A 10 mm well defined fat density mass is noted at the posteromedial aspect of the left kidney, most consistent with angiomyolipoma.

In addition, a few subcentimeter simple cortical cysts are seen in kidneys.

Case Discussion

The porcelain gallbladder refers to calcium encrustation of the gallbladder wall. Patients are usually asymptomatic, and porcelain gallbladder is usually found incidentally on plain abdominal radiographs, ultrasound, or CT images.
