Echogenic fetal lungs

Case contributed by Dr Praveen Jha

Presentation

20 weeks anomaly scan

Patient Data

Age: 20 Wks gestation
Gender: Female
Ultrasound

Bilateral fetal lungs appear enlarged and diffusely echogenic. Trachea could be seen, of normal caliber (see 3-vessel view). No fetal hydrops or any other obvious anomaly could be visualized.

Case Discussion

Echogenic fetal lungs could be due to variety of reasons. In view of diffuse bilateral increase in echogenicity, as well as increased lung volume, possibility of congenital high airways obstruction is being considered.
