Blunt trauma to the eye
Ultrasound of the globe demonstrating dislocation of the lens which is floating in echogenic vitreous. It is echogenic because of the associated haemorrhage.
Case Discussion
Ectopia lentis aka dislocation of the lens. This ocular ultrasound shows echogenic vitreous due to haemorrhage and the lens floating in the vitreous cavity. The commonest cause is trauma. Other causes include hereditary ectopia lentis; primary ocular disorders such as aniridia and intraocular tumours; and systemic disorders such as Marfan syndrome, homocystinuria and Weil-Marchesani syndrome.
