Elderly-onset ulcerative colitis

Presentation

Abdominal pain, weight loss, and decreased appetite for two months without any history of known disease.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

There is a long segment and diffuse inflammatory type wall thickening and decreased luminal width in distal descending colon extended within all segments of sigmoid colon and rectum wall. There is also mucosal fold thickening in some ileum loops.The gallbladder is contracted.

Case Discussion

The case is a pathology proved ulcerative colitis in a 60-year-old man with a history of abdominal pain, weight loss, and decreased appetite for two months.

MDCT scan and MRI have a leading role in the primary diagnosis and evaluation of the disease activity and complications such as fistula and mesenteric abscess. Management of the elderly-onset IBD can be quite different from the young age onset.
