Severe right upper quadrant pain
Patient Data
Targeted ultrasound of the gallbladder demonstrates multiple tiny echogenic foci in the gallbladder lumen resembling effervescing bubbles in the glass of champagne (see annotated image).
Wall thickness was within normal limits.
No pericholecystic fluid was observed.
Emphysematous cholecystitis was confirmed on subsequent CT scan.

Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrates multiple air locules in the gallbladder with the largest in the region of the fundus in keeping with emphysematous cholecystitis.
Marked associated surrounding fat stranding.
No evidence of perforation.
