Emphysematous cystitis

Case contributed by Dr Maxime St-Amant

Diabetic patient with acute abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 90
Gender: Female

Abdominal x-rays shows air surrounding de bladder with an air fluid-level, highly suggestive of emphysematous cystitis.

Pelvic NECT confirms the diagnosis (only part of the pelvis shown because of metallic artifacts rending the rest of the exam useless). No extra-luminal air. There is a thickening of the bladder secondary to the inflammatory process.

Case Discussion

Emphysematous cystitis refers to gas forming infection of the bladder wall.
