Case contributed by Maxime St-Amant
Diagnosis possible

Presentation

Diabetic patient with acute abdominal pain.

Patient Data

Age: 90 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Abdominal x-ray shows air surrounding the bladder with an air-fluid level within, highly suggestive of emphysematous cystitis.

ct

Pelvic NECT confirms the diagnosis (only part of the pelvis shown because of metallic artifacts rending the rest of the exam useless). No extra-luminal air. There is a thickening of the bladder secondary to the inflammatory process.

Case Discussion

Emphysematous cystitis refers to gas forming infection of the bladder wall.
